SLURRY SEAL

 

The City of Salem has contracted with ASTECH off Sioux Falls SD bid for application of a Slurry Seal on the streets shown on the map.

Scheduled Application Date? The week of August 17th.

The 2026 Slurry seal process is phased which is shown on the map, and achieves the following:
1) Access to Beebe Ave will be maintained from either Geroge Street or Hill Street.
2) Access to the Salem Apartments and Leisure Living will be maintained along Hill Street from either the north or south.
3) Closure of Hill Street south of Leisure Living will be 4:00 PM or later to avoid disruption during core business hours of adjacent businesses.

What is slurry seal?

Slurry seal is a mixture of aggregate (small rock), asphalt emulsion, cement, and water. The asphalt emulsion serves as a binder, holding the crushed aggregate together and adhering the new slurry surface to the old surface which it is being applied over. Mixing and spreading are accomplished in one continuous operation, with the applied surface being ready for traffic within a few hours.

How is slurry seal applied?

The process begins with notification to residents of the street closing. Each property owner will be notified with a letter and the Community Alert System will be used to notify the property owner two days prior to the slurry seal process.

The street is closed to all traffic. A thorough street cleaning follows to insure a good bond. Next slurry seal is applied to the road surface using truck mounted application equipment. Approximately 5 hours is required after application to cure the slurry seal – drying time varies with weather conditions. The street is then reopened once the seal is dry.

Benefits:

Slurry seal has been very effective in extending pavement life. Its most notable features are:

  • It seals out moisture over the entire pavement.
  • It stops the oxidation process on the original pavement.
  • It fills minor voids and depressions.
  • It provides a non-skid surface.
  • Its comparatively low cost makes it an effective alternative in street maintenance today.
